is this the end?

It's seems sad but true. After a month of wondering why one of our top style inspirations wasn't blogging, Agathe from stylebytes took down her site without even a whisper. Stylebytes.com was one of the many reasons we decided to take our grasshopper blog from the iweb bore it was before to what you are reading now. This girl had her finger on the pulse of what we were searching for. Inspiration shone through in her DIY projects, her home-cooked meals, interior decoration, photography and of course, her wardrobe. And now what will I do without little Molvin to wonder about?

tickle your fancy....

We are getting it back together here after a glorious holiday weekend. Thought I would post a few new arrivals like these whimsical feather hair clips by the lovely Laura Kranitz. We have been lusting over these fabulously flapper inspired clips ever since spying them over at Show Pony in LA. Well, we think east coast girls need them too. So if you are feeling a need to channel you inner Daisy Buchanan or you are looking for something to spice up that little black dress-grasshopper has plenty to choose from. Also perfect for wedding season!

...and once again, feather earrings from Rise Up. This time we have them in three colors-natural, green, & red. This is the third order we have gotten in and the are usually sold out within 2 days so come in ASAP to get your hands on a pair!

It's just what you've been waiting for....

Memorial Day weekend is only days away and that means two things...party time & bbq! I myself, will be heading to the beach, but not without doing a few updates first. Some late spring arrivals came in between today and Saturday. Linda Smyth has added to her continous fleather collection. We have plenty more than what is pictured so get your butt down here and grab her new styles of fleather hoops and fleathers with colored aluminum chain. They're out of control! While you are at it, you might want to check out the fantastic new high waisted shorts just in from Grey Ant. Deep denim rinse with the woven pocket detailing. Too hot to handle! And last but surely not least, our newest label addition at grasshopper....Blood Is The New Black. Quirky tees for men & women. Check it out...

Fly the Friendly Skies

Wired has a slideshow of flight attendants from yesteryear. These are my favorite pics.

feelin' it

I have always, as far back as I can remember, been obsessed with Gunne Sax & Jessica McClintock dresses. It must have started some time when my subscription to Barbie Magazine began. I remember looking at the ads of little girls in these amazing McClintock party frocks looking gorgeous and sophisticated for mere 10 year olds. I would wait outside on the front steps on spring nights to watch my neighborhood babysitters dressed in full length Gunnes with matching chiffon cape-lets & boleros on the way to the prom.
This fascination cooled for awhile until a recent trip to San Francisco (home of the Gunne) where I found a 1970's Gunne Sax in a second hand shop on Haight Street. After that the obsession started all over again and now I have a small collection growing. These pieces are so well constructed and with such great details-velvet inlays, contrast trim, pearl buttons, lace hems. No one makes anything like this anymore. The company was actually named after the "gunny sack" or burlap trim used on some of the earlier dresses. Some collectors consider clothing with the original "black label," used only in 1969, the most valuable. A "hearts label" was used for a short time following, until the 1970s and early '80s larger label with scrollwork was put into use. Here are some recent ebay listings showcasing the rare and usually most beautiful Black Label pieces.

spring fun

I celebrated my birthday last week and it seems like it has been two weeks of non-stop fun times ever since the beginning of May. It also seems as though there are a lot of other May babies & bulls out there running amok. I hope the parties never end! It started with flowers and cupcakes from Tracy on my birthday morning.

That night there was a joint birthday party for me and my sister from another mister, Jen. Lot's of friends, good food, many bottles of prosecco and wine, great gifts, and funny cards! (And lots of grasshopper clothing being worn)

birthday girl owl rings

Yesterday I was taken out for my birthday for a picnic and nature walk at Mill Grove-the first home of John James Audubon, illustrator of birds and other wildlife in the early 1800's. We toured the house and walked the grounds. I'm not a bird fanatic or anything but it did feel great to get out of the city, lay in a field of grass & buttercups in the sunshine and listen to the birds sing. I even saw a real life baby owl.

And at the end of the day I had Tracy's BBQ on her newly revamped deck to look forward to! What a great time!! Six friends, caipirinha cocktails, plenty of finger foods, and a grilled feast of veggies, steaks and sausages. I even snagged a Kime Buzzelli pillow from Tlu for my birthday from Bona Drag!!

Buy Local

I am having another dinner party tonight on my deck and so I decided to do most of my shopping at the Reading Terminal Market. If you park in the garage at 12th and Filbert it is only $3 for two hours. Just make sure one of the vendors you make a purchase with validates your parking ticket.
I really wanted to try Delilah's as Oprah voted her macaroni and cheese the best in the country in 2003. I don't know about it being the best in the country, but it was fantastic. However, the fried chicken, that was the best fried chicken I ever had. Then there is my favorite cupcakes from Termini Bros. Bakery. And no day is complete without rescuing another plant
